| Why xMinds? |
 |
Students on the autism spectrum have great potential to pursue higher education and meaningful work. But they also have unique social, emotional, behavioral and cognitive needs that must be addressed for them to engage in the curriculum, be accepted by their school communities, and have positive educational outcomes. Partnership for Extraordinary Minds (xMinds) is dedicated to addressing the educational needs of these students. Generally, these students have been diagnosed with high-functioning autism, PDD-NOS, Asperger's Syndrome, or nonverbal learning disorder, although some students remain undiagnosed or are identified with an educational disability other than autism, such as ADHD or Speech and Language Impairment. |
What is an “extraordinary” mind?
Extraordinary literally means “not ordinary.” The autistic brain can differ in its development, anatomical structure, and “wiring” (the way the parts of the brain communicate with each other). The result is that people with autism think and perceive differently. Social interaction and problem solving can be significantly impacted; however differences in the brain also can result in marked strengths such as exceptional visual processing and visual memory.
Whom do we serve?
We support families and educators by presenting information that is essential to effectively collaborate to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. This information includes:
- The characteristics of autism/Aspergers and how these characteristics affect the child's behavior and learning style
- Strategies that are effective in helping these children engage in the curriculum, form peer relationships, and be included in the school community
- The IEP process, including sample goals and objectives
- Educational placements, services, and accommodations available in Montgomery County Public Schools
In Montgomery County Maryland we provide events where families can have fun, share their experiences, exchange ideas, and form informal support groups. They can also speak with school board members and school personnel, who are invited to every event. We support policy makers by increasing their awareness of the characteristics and needs of diploma-bound students on the autism spectrum.
Who are our partners?
Our partners are parents, educators, policy makers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and professional organizations. We work together to improve the educational experience and educational outcomes for diploma-bound students on the autism spectrum.
